Steam Will Discontinue Support For Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 On January 2024

A Tech Era Has Come To An End

The end of Valve Beginning on January 1st, 2024, Steam will support earlier Windows operating system versions. The ability to download, install, and play games through Steam will no longer be available for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems.

According to the company's official blog post, "The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows," Windows 10 and 11 will still be able to access the service.

Only 0.09% of users use a 32-bit version of Windows 7, whereas 1.43% of players use Steam on a 64-bit version of Windows 7, according to Valve's February Hardware and Software Survey. While 62.33% of users use Windows 10, only 0.34% of Windows 8.1 users utilize Steam to play games.

Given that big gaming businesses like Fortnite just withdrew support for Windows 7 and 8 early last month, the end of Steam's support for these two OSes shouldn't come as a surprise. They gave the Unreal Engine 5.1 implementation's impact on earlier system OS's ability to run the game as their justification, while game streaming through Nvidia GeForce Now offers a workaround.

The best, safest, and official way to get games for PCs without running the danger of contracting viruses on famous gaming websites is still through Steam. For people who can't afford certain games, Steam may occasionally reduce the price of games for a brief period, allowing customers to buy titles for a very cheap price, such as from $39.99 to $9.99. They have made sales and events for 2023 public so that users can make plans in advance.
